Navy Complain Over Shipyard Construction in Batam

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The National Armed Forces have filed compliant over a construction of a new shipyard near the Batam Naval Base in Riau Islands, Sumatra, and demanded cease on the project on ground that the new facility was too close to the naval base.

Commander of Batam Naval Base, Lieutenant Colonel Purwanto said on Tuesday (12/1) the navy objected to the presence of a foreign company near a military site, without disclosing the name of the company.

He said there was a special regulation on military zone or region which protects equipments or strategic facilities from potential threats, saying “There should be no infiltration.” Purwanto who feared that the private facility would developed in the future said “there should be no infiltration”.

Operator of the trade zone, Otorita Batam said they have stopped the construction about 200 meters away from the naval base, while denying it has issued a license for the project.
