FTA is strategy to expand exports, accelerate investment: Official

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Free Trade Area (FTA) is a strategy for expansion of exports and acceleration of investment development in the face of tighter and dynamic global competition, a senior economic official said.

"Indonesia adheres to economic openness and cooperation in goods and services exchange to optimize its economy for the people`s welfare and therefore FTA is one of our strategies to expand export and investment," Edy Putra Irawady, a deputy for trade and industry affairs to the coordinating minister for economic affairs, said here on Wednesday.

Edy made the statement as a keynote speaker at a seminar on "Domestic Industry During the Implementation of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement."

He said the Free Trade Area should also be viewed as an effort to break the economic isolation of regions and develop the potentials of regional economies, but it did not necessarily mean the free entry of imported goods.

"We do not adhere to a free trade policy in the sense of an openness without any control, and none of our products is freely traded across the border," he said.

Edy explained that the government had adopted a strategy to secure the domestic market by among other things promoting the use of domestic products and "pre-clearance" supervision.

"Other measures we will take to step up our exports are among other things the strengthening of our overseas representative offices, promotion of tourism, trade and investment, solution of export problems, development of trading houses, and increasing the role of the Indonesian Export Financing Agency (LPEI)," Edy said.

In addition, the government would also make improvements in domestic matters such as management in land use, infrastructure and energy, incentive provision, strengthening of free trade zones (FTZ), development of special economic areas, expansion of budget access, management of the logistics system, simplifying regulations, and development of prioritized industries.(*)
