Riau Police Intensify Patrols to Overcome Smuggling

TEMPO Interactive, Batam:Riau Islands Police Chief, Brigadier General Puji Hartanto has said that the police have six long tail boats to use especially for patrols.

Even though the boats are not sophisticated, they really help the police in the eradication of smuggling.

“The price is more affordable,” Puji told Tempo on Wednesday night (3/2).

The police have found illegal harbors that are used as smuggling locations.

The modus operandi is to operate smuggle products from islands to islands within a short distance of Malaysia and Singapore.

To make the patrols more effective, the police also involve the community, especially fishermen.

“If there are any suspicious activities, fishermen can directly report these to the police,” he said.

Up until now this, smugglers have been arrested at the Hang Nadim International Airport, Batam, when they want to continue their travel to another region.

There are indications that they manage to enter Batam through the illegal harbors.

To minimize the smuggling activities, community participation is much needed.

Head of the Malay Batam Traditions Institution Imron said he felt that the police pay attention to them, especially fishermen and long tail boat users because they have been provided with free life jackets. “It’s only just now that we feel that the police give us attention.” said Imron to Tempo through his cell phone, on Thursday (4/2). Fishermen feel secure not only about their safety on the ocean but also because the police have partnered with them.
