Customs Foil Tin Sand Smuggling Attempt

Karimun, Riau Islands (ANTARA News) - Customs officers in Riau Islands have foiled an attempt to smuggle out 15 tons of tin sand worth around Rp500 million to Malaysia.

The officers aboard a patrol boat foiled the smuggling attempt in Natuna waters early Friday, spokesman of the Riau Islands provincial customs office Andhi Pramono said in a short text message on Saturday.

The tin sand was carried from West Kalimantan province by an Indonesian-registered motor vessel MV Harapan Utama, he said.

The vessel skippered by Andi Agus with a crew of four was being towed to Ketapang port in Karimun district, he said.

"It takes 38 hours to tow the vessel to the port," he said.

He said the tin sand was packed in sacks weighing 50 kg each without being equipped with customs documents.

"They intentionally sailed through the high sea during an extreme weather to avoid customs officers," he said.(*)
