Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The General Election Commission of the Kepulauan Riau (Kepri) province, which shares border with Singapore, has decided in Tanjung Pinang city that HM Sani-Soerya Respationo pair won the gubernatorial polls held on Wednesday (May 26).

The provincial Electoral Body (KPU) chairperson, Den Yealta said in the provincial capital city of Tanjung Pinang on Wednesday (June 9) that HM Sani-Soerya Respationo pair got 231.951 votes or 37,30 percent of the total 621,847 valid votes.

HM Sani-Soerya Respationo pair was followed by Nyat Kadir-Zulbahri pair who gained 195.847 votes or 31,49 percent, while Aida Zulaikha Ismeth-Eddy Wijaya pair only obtained 194.049 votes or 31,21 percent.

The KPU said, the valid votes amounted 621,847 and the unvalid votes reached 27,959 votes.

Den said further that out of the total of 1,222,626 registered voters only 649,806 people voted on the election day or 53.15 percent.

Aida Zulaikha Ismeth aspirant is wife of the incumbent governor Ismeth Abdullah.

Ismeth Abdullah (the first Kepri governor) had been officially named a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in the procurement of firetrucks for Batam.

During a public debate session as part of their campaigns, the three pairs of candidates had expressed their readiness to support whoever would win the provincial polls.

The KPU formalized three gubernatorial candidate pairs (HM Sani-Soerya Respationo, Aida Zulaikha Ismeth-Eddy Wijaya and Nyat Kadir-Zulbahri) as the provincial poll`s contestants.

"We are committed to supporting whoever wins because we all have the same objectives, namely towards a prosperous society and morality," one of the candidates said.

However, witnesses of candidates who failed in the polls were reluctant to sign the provincial General Election Commission (KPU) decision, Den Yealta said.

The would be governor will replace Ismeth Abdullah, the first governor of the country`s 32nd province of the total 33 provinces.

The Indonesia`s 33rd province is Bangka Belitung or Babel province in the southern part of Sumatra Island.

Kepri province has four districts namely Bintan, Karimun, Natuna, Kepulauan Anambas and Lingga and two cities - Tanjung Pinang and Batam, 47 sub-districts and 274 villages with 2,408 big and small islands and 30 percent of which has no names and still unhabited.

Kepri province shares borders with Vietnam and Cambodia in the north, with West Kalimantan province in the east, with Kepulaun Bangka Belitung and Jambi in the South, Singapore and Malaysia and Riau province in the west.

Kepri area has 252,601 km width, about 95 percent of which is waters and only about 5 percent is land.

Kepri province is only second to Bali Island in their efforts to attract foreign tourists, for instance in 2005 around 5 million tourists visited the resort island.

Among several tourist objects in this province are the beaches of Pantai Melur, Pulau Abang dan Pantai Nongsa in Batam, Pantai Pelawan in Karimun district, Pantai Lagoi, Pantai Tanjung Berakit, Pantai Trikora, Bintan Leisure Park in Bintan district. While the Natuna district is wellknown for snorkeling.

HM Sani, the former vice governor of the Kepri province, will lead the region for 2010-2015 term of office after winning the first direct gubernatorial election.

Apart from that, the local electoral body on May 26 also simultaneously conducted three regential head elections namely in the districts of Bintan, Anambas and Lingga.
In the meantime, Home Affairs Minister, Gamawan Fauzi when inspecting the gubernatorial polls in Batam among other said that it was the first provincial head election held this year.

Thus, he expressed hope that the election could become a barometer to other regional head polls in the country.
