We are running 2 major projects in batam and having trouble finding skilled workers for the Insulation Business. We can find from from Java but then you have all the transport and housing cost which makes the projects non profitable. many people claim they can do the work but in the end they struggle to do the work. This only causes problems on site with the clients and makes the company look bad because we are unable to do the work on time. Any suggestions out there on this matter?

truly, i think the best solution is to recruit from java. and by java, i don't mean sunda! smile javanese usually have better work ethic, though they do need supervision and motivation. also, they don't seem to have the "rip off" mentality of batak or many of those from eastern indonesia (ambon, etc). the local melayu in batam are rather unmotivated, and seem to think the world owes them something.

I have gone through the cost and it would seem that the high cost of experienced people in Batam works out to almost the smae cost after bringing people in from java and paying all the expenses etc.....Also the logistics of bringing people in is a head ache as well. On certain work forces i would have to agree though that the labor from java is better but the cost is the same.

ideally, you would have some kind of training workshop located in, say, Solo, where you could try out tradesmen before sending them off to Batam. that way you could sort the wheat from the chaff. the problem would be finding something productive that they could actually do.

Which one do you prefer?

Skilled Labor with less loyal or Loyal labor with "half" skilled??

Actually if we talking about java's worker, we are talking about their loyal attitude (i'm not talking that others are bad).
Javanese are spread allover the places, even here at batam. you can easily hire them and train them......

as HR practitioner, i found that the main goal to recruit people is to see how possible the person will last long stay at our company.
there's no such thing call stupid person, only Lazy person.
by that, we need to seek diligent and loyal person and train 'em....

But if we searching employees for "Short term project", there is no way for us to deal with training (long Training) for sure we need "plug and play" employees. and as we know all, i costs us higher....

Regards

I totally agree with this. We are looking for long term employees and we provide very specific on the job training. Our pay scale is also above all of our competitors in this area. Example:

For a general worker/helper we par Basic IDR 1250000 per month plus 30000 per day allowance. Most companies only pay IDR

For Skilled worker we pay Basic IDR 1470500 per month plus 30000 per day allowance.

Foreman we pay Basic IDR 1750000 per month plus 30000 per day allowance.

We reward our employees for achievements, we help them in times of family crisis or need. We have a very low turnovr rate for our workers. I am not saying we dont have our problems but we want the employees to be happy. If they are happy then we will succeed.80% of our worke force has been with us for more than 1 year since we opened for business. Even when we dont have so much work and have to put the people on standby we kee them on the books and pay them on a standby rate but this also has rules (No freelance working).
