Up to 20 people a day are dying on Batam's roads

"Every day 20 people die from road accidents in Batam," stated Barelang Police Commissioner Chief Satlantas Dhameswara in Batam, Friday (30 / 7). He said 90 percent of the accidents which result in fatalities involve motorcycle riders.

"The majority of deaths occur because riders do not use a helmet,he said. According Dhameswara, accidents resulting in death occurred due to single vehicle accidents and collisions with cars, resulting in head trauma. "That's why helmets are so important. Helmets can save lives,",

Kepulauan Riau Regional Police have also sold helmets at more affordable prices in order to encourage the use of helmets which meet the government standard, in order to maintain safety.

Previously, Chevron in collaboration with international NGO, the Asia Injury Prevention (AIP) Foundation distributed 650 helmets to elementary school children in Batam. (Ant / BANG)

20?! sounds rather high, just for Batam alone.

I thought so too. There are a staggering amount of deaths in the outlying areas but 20 means 7200 per year. That would be very surprising.

I spoke to a friend in the Police Department and he says that this may be the combined deaths for Riau Islands, which sounds more reasonable.
