Bird Smuggling from Batam

THE proprietor of Tai Hua Aquarium Fish & Birds Trading and a trader pleaded guilty in a district court yesterday to smuggling in birds from Batam.

Teo Hai Soon, 54, was fined $7,000 for instigating Indonesian Kwok Djan Leng, 49, into bringing in seven singing birds. Kwok, 49, was jailed a day and fined $8,000.

When arrested by customs officials at the Singapore Cruise Centre on Sunday, he had 11 birds hidden in his sling bag and 16kg of ant larvae, which is used as bird food.

Importing birds from Batam is forbidden to prevent the spread of bird flu. Kwok also needed a licence from the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority to bring in the ant larvae, and was fined $3,000
