RI, Thailand to cooperate in attracting investment

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia and Thailand have agreed to cooperate in attracting investments, capitalizing on their strengths as investment destinations with promising potentials.

"The two countries have the same wish and want to attract investors," Indonesian Deputy Trade Minister Mahendra Siregar told ANTARA News, after delivering a keynote speech at the Indonesia-Thailand Business Forum and Business Networking Programs 2010 in Jakarta Wednesday.

Held for the very first time, the forum was opened by Thai Ambassador to Indonesia Thanatip Upatising and Mahendra Siregar, and also attended by Dr. Suthad Setboonsarng, Thailand`s Trade Representative as well as some 100 participants representing business circles of both countries.

Mahndra said the commitment of both countries to share and exchange experiences in efforts to lure investors had been encouraged by a new perspective on seeing where the markets were, namely mo longer only in industrialized countries. "The Asia-Pacific is the market of today," he said.

The Asia-Pacific region was now considered a new market, he added, because there was no certainty when the economies of the industrialized countries would recover from their current stagnancies.

On the cooperation nurtured by Indonesia and Thailand to jointly attract investors, he said there were still challenges that needed to be overcome, including those related to regulations and investment protection. "Both countries will facilitate and consult each other on these matters," he said.

Meanwhile, Setboonsarng, at a press conference on the event, said his government was pleased to hold the business forum and the networking organized as these activities would facilitate closer ties between Indonesia and Thailand and strengthen trade relations.

The one-day business seminar and networking was designed to facilitate business people from both countries to share their success stories and understand better vital investment laws, regulations, taxation policies, according to the organizer.
