Recently received news of new developments (requirements) in Merchant Marine certification from my friend, Beni, who was recently on Batam to list himself with crewing agents on Batam.

Crewing agents are now asking for "watch-keeping certification" for all on-board personnel. I checked Pertamina's site for this add'l class and times. Originally, suppose to be about 11 days and r. 2.7 million. Now, it's r. 3.8 million and about 2 months! Next class starts Nov 23.

Here's a paste of Beni's e-mail after returning from Pertamina in Jakarta:
"I checked to Pertamina that the classes for november was fully book (no more classes), and I put for waiting list on december and they have also a lot of waiting list applicant for these time. and for information that watchkeeping course in 2011 will be take 3 months per course. it is very terrible!!! and now only 11 days as your write to me and as i told to you before. the cost are r 2,500,000 + r 640,000 ( 16 day x r 40.000 per room) + r 480,000 ( 16 days x r 30,000 meals per day) + transport bdg to jkt return r, 150,000 and 11 days =16 days because saturday and sunday are off so that the days to be increase. and grand total are r. 3,770.000. and cost will more if take as in New zealand standard certificates."

He also indicated that "fake certification cards" are in circulation for r. 400K a pop.

Can anyone speak to this? Or add anymore information. I told Beni, I would cover his tuition (US$425), but 2-3 months more school for this certification is a bit much, especially, when you figure in add'l living expenses, and then, an agent's booking fee.
