Melaka And Batam Looking At Direct Flight Services

From Nasarudin Omar

BATAM, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- The Melaka State Government and Indonesia's Riau Islands (Kepri) plan to work together towards having direct flights between the Melaka International Airport (LTAM) and Hang Nadim Airport here.

Melaka Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, said he and the Governor of Kepri, Muhammad Sani have basically agreed to the sharing of an aeroplane be it Boeing or other aircraft to be rented to transport tourists from both sides. It would be for both normal and medical related tourism.

"Melaka is a popular destination for the people of Sumatera to get treatment in private hospitals here and at the same time there are also tourists from Melaka who are keen to come here to tour and that is why direct flights will be suitable," he told reporters here after officiating the Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam (Malay World Islam World)(DMDI)'s 11th convention at the Sumatera Convention Centre here Thursday.

The DMDI's conference, being held for the first time out of Melaka, was also officiated by Mohd Ali and Muhammad. More than 1,000 participants comprising DMDI members from Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Thailand, Singapore and Brunei attended the event.

DMDI, formed 11 years ago has its secretariat in Melaka and covers collaboration among member nations in the areas of languages, culture, economy, welfare, education and tourism.

Mohd Ali said he would be negotiating with the tourist agent in Sumatera and private hospitals in Melaka, adding that direct flights have been also suggested for the destinations of Palembang, Jambi, Padang, Medan, Bandung, Pontianak in Kalimantan.

"We have the joint partnership between Riau Air and Dragon Air in bringing passengers through the LTAM-Pekan Baru direct flights which currently stands at seven times a week," he said.

Mohd Ali said he also has the offer from the Firefly airline to rent their plane at a rate of RM600,000 a month or RM7.2 million a year.

Meanwhile, Muhammad said there were four flights weekly between the Hang Nadim Airport and Subang Airport.

"This cooperation in airlink with Melaka is sutable as the majority of the people from both countries, use the ferry to link Batam and Melaka," he said.
