Jakarta. The National Police anti-trafficking unit arrested a couple for trafficking a housemaid to Penang, Malaysia, who was subsequently beaten and raped by her employers there, a police source said on Wednesday.

“We arrested Karmin Sembiring and his wife, Uli Basana Barus, three days ago at their private residence in Batam,” an officer handling this case said on condition of anonymity.

The source said the couple had a license to operate a labor supply agency, or PJTKI, but should have never sent the worker to Malaysia. The agency was identified as Hasrat Insan Nurani.

“This PJKTI was responsible for sending Wifa Indah, 26, to Malaysia. She has been hospitalized after being tortured and raped by her employers. Wifa should not have been sent to Malaysia because we have temporarily stopped sending migrant workers there.”

Brig. Gen. Agung Sabar Santoso, National Police director for general crimes, confirmed the case .

“Yes we arrested suspects on trafficking suspicions,” Agung said.

The suspects could be charged with violating the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Labor Abroad Law, which carries a maximum punishment of four years in prison.

Wifa, who has been hospitalized on Penang Island, confirmed that she had been beaten and repeatedly raped before being dumped in a park, the source said.

He added that the medical examination confirmed injuries to her genitals.

The source said Wifa’s female employer took part in the beating and even assisted her husband in the rape. Malaysian Police have arrested the two, he said.
