AIDS in Dumai transmitted 90 percent by sexual intercourse

Dumai, Riau (ANTARA News) - The AIDS Eradication Commission (KPA) of Dumai city found out that at least 95 percent of 64 HIV-AIDS sufferers have the disease from free sexual intercourse, secretary of the Dumai city AIDS Eradication Commission, Marjoko Santoso said here Wednesday.

"While the remaining five percent or more, have the disease from sharing syringes and narcotic abuse," he noted.

Of the 64 Dumai people who have the deadly virus, five have it when being pregnant, and 18 people are students. The rest are men and women engaged in prostitution.

According to Marjoko, currently the number of people with HIV-AIDS tend to significantly increase, so the spread of the disease needs to be stopped immediately.

He said an very effective effort to decrease the number of people with HIV-IDS is warn them about the long negative impact of the disease and make them more confident in living independently, and always avoid bad night life.

To improve the health services, the local administration also needs to provide free and affordable services for IMC-VCT (Voluntary Counseling and Testing) at IMS-VCT clinics and VCT-CST (care, support and treatment) at the Dumai city general hospital, Marjoko explained.
