Batam`s wholesale market suggested to be Batik market

Batam (ANTARA News) - Batam city councilor Rekaveny has suggested that Jodoh wholesale market in the city be developed into a batik market.

"The market is not maintained properly and I think it is better to develop it into a batik market to support the designation of Batam as an ASEAN batik trade center," Rekaveny said here on Sunday.

He said that as a center of ASEAN batik trade, Batam needs a center of batik sales.

According to him, a batik trade center should be a strategically located like the Jodoh wholesale market.

"It is better for the batik trade center not to be in a building but outdoors," Rekaveny said.

He said the Jodoh wholesale market was considered best suited to be turned into a batik central market in Batam.

Meanwhile, Riau Islands deputy Governor Soerya Respationo said batik development in the district could be included in a revised regional budget 2011.

"I support the batik development but the regional budget for it should be made with regional legislative assembly (DPRD)," Soerya said.

Therefore he called on all the relevant parties including the DPRD to support the designation of Batam as an ASEAN batik center to preserve the ancestral culture.

You would think with as many empty buildings even old shopping centres which have been virtually abandonded(Which are many in Batam) the goverment would leave the market areas alsone and take on\ver one of these old shopping centres and convert it into a Batik Centre. I can give you an excellent location: The old My Mart Shopping Centre in Batam Centre. It is a perfect location on the main road with ample parking as well. Another location would be the new shoppiong and office centre just close to the barelang Police Station. This place has virtually no tenants for many years since its completion. When is someone going to stop wasting valuable resources and land and do something with these places? If you take over the market people will have to move their business elsewhere and this will only cost more money. I love Indonesia but sometimes its very sad to see all of these things just going to waste......
