Government Not Yet Discuss Trade Zones Council
Wednesday, 16 January, 2008 | 17:51 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The government has stated that the delay in establishing the Batam, Bintan and Karimun Free Trade Zones Council was because so far the Special Economic Zone Development National Team (KEKI) has not yet held any meetings.

The team will finalize the zone council establishment.

“It should have been discussed by the KEKI team last week, but this was canceled as the ministers' schedule was tight,” Eddy Putra Irawady, Deputy Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Industry and Trade Division, told Tempo yesterday (15/1).

He explained that the national team will discuss the structure of the zones council based on the governors’ suggestions.

“As regards the Batam, Bintan and Karimun Zones Council, it is the president's authority,” he said.

According to Eddy, the zones council not yet being established does not influence the investment climate in those zones.

“So far it isn't yet influential as the industry and trade activities are in fact busy in Batam,” he said.

Earlier, entrepreneurs and industry groups in Batam complained about the Batam, Bintan and Karimun Free Trade Zones Council not being established yet.

Investors were awaiting the council's establishment before investing (Koran Tempo, January 15).

Earlier, the government set a Government Regulation replacing State Decree No.1/2007 on the revision of Decree No.36/200 on Free Trade Zones and Free Ports to be made into a decree last year.

From Batam, it was reported that an electronic company from Singapore, PT Escatec, has closed down its business.

Bintan Deputy Regent, Mastur Taher, acknowledged having received the information from the Regency Manpower Service regarding the company's closure as of January 31, 2008.
