Tighter Control over Small Islands Management in Central Java

TEMPO Interactive, Semarang: Central Java Governor, Bibit Waluyo, has said that arrangement for private sectors to obtain permission to manage small islands in Central Java will be tightened up.

Bibit also assured that no islands in the Karimunjawa Islands, Jepara, were being sold to foreign investors. “I have confirmed this directly with the Jepara Regent,” said Bibit yesterday (31/8).

There are 33 small islands in Central Java. Some 30 of them are included in the Karimunjawa Islands, two are in Rembang Regency, and one is Nusakambangan Island in Cilacap. “We will protect small islands more,” said Bibit.

Member of B Commission of the Central Java Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), Fatria Rahmadi, agreed with governor’s statement. “Protection of small islands’ ownership and management is a must,” she said.

Regarding small islands management, the Central Java DPRD has issued a regional regulation draft about coastal areas and small islands management in Central Java.

Fatria explained that the regulation divided areas and islands into several zones. “There are exploitative zones, conservative zones, and residence zones whose management relies on ecology principles,” said Fitria.
